| About Canada
Canada is the world's second largest country by total area, occupying most of northern North America. Extending from the
Atlantic Ocean to the
Pacific Ocean and northward into the
Arctic Ocean , shares land borders with the United States to the south and to the northwest. is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. It was formed as a confederation of British colonies in 1867 and secured effective independence in the 1920s. With a population of 33 million spread over 10 million km², and major oil supplies, Canada is one of the most prosperous countries of the world and a magnet for immigrants. It is an active member of NATO and the United Nations.
Canada contains great reserves of natural resources, notably timber, petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, and fish. It is also an important manufacturing country, and its major cities, such as
Toronto , Montréal,
Winnipeg ,
Calgary ,
Edmonton ,
Vancouver , and
Ottawa (the country's capital) are bustling centers of commerce and industry. Most of 's inhabitants live in the S part of the country, and vast areas of the N are very sparsely inhabited. The country is divided into ten provinces (
Alberta ,
British Columbia ,
Manitoba ,
New Brunswick, Newfoundland ,
Nova Scotia ,
Ontario, Prince Edward Island , Québec, and
Saskatchewan ) and three territories (
Northwest Territories ,
Nunavut , and
Yukon Territory ). The name is derived from an Iroquoian Indian term meaning “village” or “community.”
Although trains are not nearly as ubiquitous and convenient a mode of travel in North America as in Europe, they remain popular with some travelers because of the spacious design of the cars, the scenic routes, and the overall comfort of the train ride. Some people prefer to take trains because they do not require long waits at security like at airports, or because they are uncomfortable with flying. Train rides in Canada often take longer than car rides and plane rides, but the unique experience can trump the long ride.
