Adilabad is situated in Adilabad District in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. This district was earlier called as Ethlabad. Adilabad derives its name from the erstwhile ruler of Bijapur , Ali Adil Shah. Adilabad has a population of 108,233 (2001 census). It is the headquarters of the district of the Adilabad. The Adilabad district occupies an area of 16,105 km² and has a population of 2,479,347 (according to the 2001 census). Adilabad is the most highly populated state in south India.Adilabad state was established in the year 1905, This place was under the rule of the kakatiya Velma and Qutubshahi and Asaf Jahin Kings. This district was formed in the year 1905. Adilabad derives its name from Ali Adil Shah, the erstwhile ruler of Bijapur. It was created out of a sub-district named Sirpur-Tandur in 1905.
