| The Railways in India are the principal mode of transportation for freight and passengers. The railways have played an important role in the development of industries and agriculture. Indian railways consist of a vast network of 7, 031 stations spread over a route length of 63, 221 km with a fleet of 7,817 locomotives, 5,321 passenger service vehicles, 4, 904 other coaching vehicles and 228, 170 wagons as on 31st March 2004.

Now Indian Railway is divided in to 16 Zones they are

The nine older railway zones are:
· Northern Railway (NR)
· North Eastern Railway (NER)
· Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR, sometimes NEFR)
· Western Railway (WR)
· Southern Railway (SR)
· South Central Railway (SCR)
· South Eastern Railway (SER)
· Eastern Railway (ER)
· Central Railway (CR)

The 7 new zones are:
· South Western Railway (SWR)
· North Western Railway (NWR)
· West Central Railway (WCR)
· North Central Railway (NCR)
· South East Central Railway (SECR)
· East Coast Railway (ECoR)
· East Central Railway (ECR)
