Introduction:
Kanchipuram, the Golden City of a thousand temples, is one of the seven most sacred pilgrim centers for the Hindus. The city is located around 70 km from Chennai in the south Indian state of Tamilnadu. Kanchipuram is the capital of the Pallavas, the Cholas and the Rayas of Vijayanagar. It was under the Pallava between the 6th and 8th AD There now remain about 126 temples in Kanchi and a few more in its outskirts. The city was the capital of the Early Cholas as far back as the 2nd century BC. It has been a center of learning Tamil, cultural and religious background for centuries. Today, it is known not only for its temples, but also for its handwoven silk fabrics.
