Introduction:
Keylong is located at an altitude of 3350 mtrs from sea level. Keylong is the head quarter of Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh lying on Indo-Tebetan Border. Keylong, 115km north of Manali, is the capital of Spiti and Lahaul. The region is mountainous, exciting, strange, primitive and delightful. "Rudyard Kipling said of the region " Surely the God live here thisno place for men. " the route of Lahaul takes a traveller over Rohtang Pass. The climate remains dry and energize. The all days are hot and all nights are extremely cold.
Attraction in Keylong-
Khardong Gompa: Its 900-year-old monastery in Khardong, formerly a capital of Lahaul, Khardong Gompa is stands just opposite the Bhaga Valley. This monastery is the largest in the area with about 30 Lamas and Chomos (nuns). There are excellent frescoes but you will have to track down a nun to open the doors for you. To get to the monastery, head through the bazaar, follow the stepped path down to the hospital, continue to the bridge over the Bhaga River and then hike up to Khardong.
Shashur Gompa: Shashur Gompa is 3 kms away from Keylong. Its dedicated to a Zanskari lama. It was built in the 16th century and s of the Gelukpa order. The 5m thangka is famous in the region. An annual festival, held every June or July (depending on the Tibetan calendar) is renowned for the mask dances performed by the lamas.
